- For the Steel Division II unit see SD2:Xylophone
Xylophone is a United States Artillery unit.
Overview[ | ]
One of the experimental applications of the M8 rocket, the Xylophone was a T27 multiple rocket launch system mounted on the cargo bed of a 2½-ton truck. The rocket itself was developed in the 1940s at Picatinny Arsenal. Entering service in 1943, the M8 was designated as a barrage rocket due to its low accuracy. As a result, it was fired from multiple launchers, with the Xylophone named used to refer to eight-tube launchers.
