Tempest Medium Rocket is a British Air unit.
Overview[ | ]
An evolution of the Hawker Typhoon, the Tempest was initially created to address its shortcomings in high altitude combat. However, the extent of modifications resulted in it diverging enough from the base design that it was reclassified as a new design. The Tempest was introduced in January 1944, a year and a half after its first flight. The Tempest was first used as a low-level interceptor, attacking V-1 flying bombs, and as ground attack aircraft. It was the fastest propeller-driven design of the war at low altitude, and one of the most powerful designs of the war. 1,702 units were produced.
