The disappointing performance of the SdKfz 7/1 led to the introduction of the superior 7/2 model. Mounting a single-barreled FlaK 36 37mm autocannon (later upgraded to the FlaK 37 with superior optics) on the proven artillery tractor chassis, the SdKfz 7/2 was well liked thanks to its increased range and firepower. Like its predecessor, the 7/2 was also outfitted with armor plating protecting the engine and driver's cabin against small arms fire and shrapnel, though it wasn't introduced until 1943.
