SAS Sniper is a French Recon unit added in Back to Hell.
Mode d'emploi[]
SAS Sniper consists of 1 sole very brave guy, in contrast to AB Sniper (2 men), Sniper Scouts (2 men), Fs-Scharfschütze (3 men) and CMDO 6 (6 men). SAS Sniper is the most fragile unit in the entire game.
The one smoke grenade might save his (or some other nearby unit's) neck when the player pays attention at the right moment to this unit.
Both Sniper rifles, the G43 and the Lee Enfield, do 1.0 physical damage and 200.0 suppression damage on hit! They have a base accuracy of 10 and a maximum range of 500m! With a two star veterancy each shot at maximum range is almost guaranteed to hit (cf. accuracy)! At zero veterancy both sniper rifles can fire one shot every 10 seconds.
lMG15, lMG34 and lMG42[]
All three weapons, lMG15, lMG34 and lMG42, do 1.0 physical damage on hit. For example the Spähtrupp costing 30 points wield one lMG34. If the sniper opened fire at 500m, the attacked unit needs to travel 100m before it can return fire. A unit traveling at 18km/h (equivalent of 5 m/s) requires (a little more then) 20 seconds to gain 100m. The lMG34 requires 4 seconds to aim. Its base accuracy is 5. There is a rather low chance of 2.8% to score a hit and wipe SAS Sniper out with its first salvo!
(Calculation: 5 (base accuracy) - 2 (range) - 2 (morale level) = 1; you need to roll a 12 to score a hit.)
If the lMG34 wants to come as close as 196m to its target, to lose the -2 range penalty, it needs to travel 306m for which it needs 61.2 seconds.
And while a Pz.Grenadier squad is much more sturdy then a Spähtrupp squad, the result is the same. ;-)
Conclusion: With its relative high range of 500m, the very high base accuracy of 10, very high suppression damage and serious physical damage, a unit with a sniper rifle, is to infantry, crewed weapons and even to unarmored vehicles like a strong AT gun to vehicles. Stay away and run away from it!
Mode de combattre[]
If you successfully reconnoitered SAS Sniper, use armored vehicles, use artillery or even some S.MG 42 with its 800m range.
Historical Perspective[]
The idea to single out particularly skilled shooters and use detached from the rest of the infantry dates back to the 15th century.
In more recent times such personnel receive additional special training and special weaponry. Also sniper teams are not merely detached from a main element, but they are being employed completely on their own.
