Please do consult Pz.Grenadier. Like those units, Pionier field the "MG42", this weapon can only fire at distances between 101m and 400m and only while stationary! But the "MG42" is not the units strongest weapon, its two satchel charges and its "2x MP 40" are! The satchel charge does 8.0 physical damage, meaning a 10-men-squad hit by one should be down to 2 men. The satchel charge will also destroy most open-top vehicles, if it hits.
Pionier units are combat engineers. When compared to allied close combat troops, Pioniers represent a middle ground that has both close range firepower, and the ability to combat long range opponents.
Pionier are not as quite as good as allied close combat troops, when fighting at 100m and less but better when fighting at 101m and more!
Each German Division had a Pionier-Bataillon organic to the Division. A Grenadier Regiment had a Pioneer platoon while the Panzergrenadier regiment had an entire Pioneer company.
12. SS-Panzer had SS Pioneer Battalion 12 with two motorized companies and one armored company.
21. Panzer had Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 220 with two companies in half-tracks and one more motorized.
