Then Lieutenant Colonel Francis S. ‘Gabby’ Gabreski has 28 confirmed kills against the Luftwaffe being the USA’s top ace on the European theater of operation while in P-47. He was shot down the day he was to be rotated back. During the Korean War he got 6 1/2 kills in a F-86.
