M16 MGMC is a United States Anti-air unit.
Overview[ | ]
The M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage was a self-propelled anti-aircraft unit created by combining the well-liked and versatile M3 half-track with a M45 Quadmount equipped with four .50 caliber M2 Browning heavy machine guns. It was effective as a counter against low-flying aircraft, but with the advances in aeronautics, it was eventually adapted as a fire support platform. It proved devastatingly effective against infantry, eventually earning the nickname Meat Chopper. The 3 550 units built and converted remained in service for a decade, until 1953.
These were used in Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, Self-Propelled. Each battery has eight M16 MGMC along with 8 more of M15 CGMC
489th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, Self-Propelled served with the 4th Armored.
3rd Armored had 486th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, Self-Propelled attached.
