Overview[ | ]
Josef "Pips" Priller was one of the most notable German fighter aces, with 101 confirmed kills to his name. A Bavarian by birth, Priller joined the Wehrmacht in 1935, at the age of 20. Steadily rising through the ranks, he earned his first kill during the Fall of France, on 28 May 1940, eventually claiming his 100th victory on 15 June 1944. For this achievement he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Shortly thereafter he was transferred to the post of Inspekteur der Jagdflieger West (Inspector of Fighter Pilots West), ceasing combat sorties and becoming one of the few lucky aces to survive the war.
He died in 1961, at the age of 45, immortalized in the movie The Longest Day.
