Since the Beo.Pz. III H (170mm) was to be assumed as an Artillery Observation tank since Panzer III have left front line service, Panzerbeobachtungswagen IV was created as Artillery observation tank. The coaxial machine gun was removed for more radio equipment and electrical generators.
21 cm Mörser 18 was a Heavy Howitzer that by independent artillery battalions and batteries. This replaced the Great War era 21 cm Mörser 16. Enter production in 1939, canceled production in 1942 by the 17 cm Kanone 18 but resumed production in 1943. The same carriage was used on 17 cm Kanone 18.
