For the Steel Division II unit see SD2:3-in Mortar (Can)

3-in Mortar is a Canadian Artillery unit.

Overview[]

The Ordnance ML 3 inch mortar was the successor of the Stokes mortar in British service, designed to provide infantry units with close artillery support. Inexpensive and easy to produce, the mortar had somewhat limited firepower and range in 1939, but revisions to the propellant, sights, and general design quickly brought it to parity with German designs. They were so effective, in fact, that it remained in service for three decades, finally superseded by the L16 81mm mortar in 1965.

Like their British Counterparts, Canadian Infantry Battalions had a Mortar Platoon in Support Company.

4th Canadian Armoured's The Lake Superior Regiment had theirs in a Mortar Section at the Company level like their British Motor Battalion counterparts.
