Strelki is the basic Soviet Infantry unit in Steel Division II.
Background[ | ]
The literal meaning of "Strelki", or "Стрелки" is "Shooter". In the era of line infantry, this term was originally used to refer to skirmishers, like French Tirailleurs. In the 1830s, the Russian military began to form independent "Strelki battalions", and this term gradually evolved into an honorary title, like German Schützen.
During the First World War, there would have been both "стрелок" and "пехота/pehota" in the Imperial Russian Army. Both are in fact general infantry, and for the sake of distinguishing, the formations of the former will be translated as, for example "Rifle Division". After the October Revolution, the Red Army, in order to boost morale, changed the name of the vast number of infantry from "Пехота" collectively to "Стрелок", a term that is still used today. (Marines are still Morskaya Pekhota.)
