==Background== Spitfire Mk IX was powered by Merlin 61 engine to counter superiority of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 over earlier marks. The Spitfire LF Mk IX was powered by Merlin 66 and were configured for low-altitude operations. This Spitfire LF Mk IXe has the Type E wing which had a heavy machine gun inboard. Various RCAF squadrons in the 2nd Tactical Air Force were equipped with Spitfire LF Mk IXe. These included No 411 Squadron, No 412 Squadron and No 442 Squadron
