7. SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen" was made up of ethnic German volunteers and conscripts from the Banat, Independent State of Croatia, Hungary and Romania. This mountain division had a infamous history of brutality against civilian population.
A regimental group created from SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 13 „Artur Phleps“ from this division was to advance to the west from the area of Mrkonjić Grad, break through any partisan resistance in the area to the east of the Sana river and then advance on a wide front to block partisan escape routes out of Drvar to the east.[1]
Like their Wehrmacht counterparts 7. SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen" has a pioneer platoon in each battalion along with one in the SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Aufklärungs-Abteilung (mot) 7 and divisional SS-Gebirgs-Pionier-Battalion 7.
