In May 1937, Romania ordered from Savoia Marchetti for 24 bombers. These were modified tri-motored S.M. 79 powered by two Romanian-built Gnôme-Rhône 14K engines. 22 of these bombers served in 1st Bomber Group (71st and 72nd Bomber Squadron). Romania wanted more bombers so a licence was bought with 36 more maid. These were re engined with Jumo 211 Da engines. First 6 in 1941 were first served in 75 Squadron of 2nd Bomber Group. In 1942, 1st Bomber Group were assigned JRS-79B. These supported Romanian forces near Stalingrad.
JRS-79B/1 was the designation for additional 36 JRS-79B equipped with Junkers Jumo 211F 1400 HP engine,
In 1944, JRS-79B1s were massed in 2nd Bomber Group (82nd and 83rd Squadron).
