Assault Pioneers is a British Infantry unit in Steel Division II.

Background[]

Assault pioneers are a special infantry formation of Commonwealth armys, designed to provide front line units with organic light engineering support, rather than have them rely on the overburdened combat engineering units. Pioneer Platoons was issued with assault equipment items, at least from mid-1943 onward, which did includes explosives and Bangalore torpedoes. The pioneers were infantrymen, trained in duties that would be familiar to RE personnel.

The platoon usually consisted of ten Pioneers with tradesmen, and from 1944 onwards consisted of two assault sections and a pioneer sections. The assault section consisted of five men with a Jeep and trailer for transportation, having specialists equipped with gear to clear mines and breach fortifications. The pioneer section consisted of ten men, including eight tradesmen (a mason, a bricklayer, and six carpenters) with a 3-ton lorry, Apart from breaching obstacles, the pioneers were also responsible for converting buildings into infantry quarters.
