Historical background[ | ]
Originally settled by migrant populations entering the North American continent through the Bering land bridge (according to one theory, at least), the modern nation of Canada has its roots in the European colonization from 1497 onward (barring a short-lived Norse attempt in 1000 AD). Aided by the First Nations in establishing colonies and surviving in the harsh climate, the European settlers proliferated and thrived, while the native population dwindled due to epidemics triggered by European diseases, border conflicts, and loss of land.
French colonies in what is now known as Canada came under British control at the end of the Seven Years War of the 18th century, with the Canadian Confederatione established in 1867. Unlike the United States, Canada remained an autonomous dominion of the British Empire and contributed greatly to the Empire's war effort in both world wars, while laying the foundation of the modern welfare state in response to the Great Depression.
Canada entered World War II on its own terms, despite the country's initial reluctance. By the end of 1945, over one million Canadians fought on all fronts of the war (10% of the country's population), including soldiers, pilots, and sailors, alongside substantial amounts of materiel produced in Canadian factories and manning convoys to deliver this bounty to other allies. Like the rest of the British Empire, Canada would go its own way, becoming a fully independent, sovereign country with only superficial ties remaining to the bankrupt United Kingdom.
