During the battles in hedgerow hell elements of the 2nd Infantry were out shot by the automatic weapons of Fallschirmjäger. This was before the June 30 1994 issue of 6 SMGs to each infantry company and the infantry squad were only equipped with Garands and BARs. So the Division procured SMGs from the various air defense units defending Omaha beach to be given to the infantry formations for additional close quarter firepower.
