6th Airborne (SD2) is a B-rated Allies Infantry division in Steel Division II, available as part of the Tribute to D-Day pack. It was the first Allied division to enter action on D-Day, the 6th Airborne was tasked with securing the left flank of the invasion. It was quite heavily equipped for an airborne unit, with medium AT guns & light tanks being brought by air by heavy Hamilcar cargo gliders.
Its commander, Sir Richard Gale, was an advocate of quality over number, Gale favoured extensive training to drill his troops to perfection, with an emphasis on shock manoeuvres. He was a decorated WW1 veteran who served in India during the Interwar, only returning to England as major in 1936. Well-regarded by his superiors, Gale was given command of 1st parachute Brigade upon its formation in 1941, and then was promoted to command the newly formed 6th Airborne Division in 1943. He spent the next year organising and training his division to accomplish the many missions required of it on D-Day. Later in the war, he went on to command I Airborne Corps.
