6th Airborne is an Allies Airborne division in Steel Division.
It was the first Allied division to enter action on D-Day, the 6th Airborne was tasked with securing the left flank of the invasion. It was quite heavily equipped for an airborne unit, with medium AT guns & light tanks being brought by air by heavy Hamilcar cargo gliders.
Its commander, Sir Richard Gale, was an advocate of quality over number, Gale favoured extensive training to drill his troops to perfection, with an emphasis on shock manoeuvres. He was a decorated WW1 veteran who served in India during the Interwar, only returning to England as major in 1936. Well-regarded by his superiors, Gale was given command of 1st parachute Brigade upon its formation in 1941, and then was promoted to command the newly formed 6th Airborne Division in 1943.
He spent the next year organising and training his division to accomplish the many missions required of it on D-Day.
Later in the war, he went on to command I Airborne Corps.
With elite infantry supported by airborne light tanks and naval artillery, 6th Airborne starts to shine in Phase A already, but in difference to the 101st Airborne and the 3. Fallschirmjäger, it is phase B where it is at its best, with the highest income you can get. The division has access to some of the strongest infantry in form of AB Paras and AB Bren Groups, but those are limited in number and the rest of the infantry tab is nothing more than mediocre, so you need to use them wisely.
The cheap tank support through Tetrarchs allows you to have a flexible AT weapon and armored infantry support. One of the strongest (and most hated) units of the 6th Airborne is the Mosquito Pathfinder with napalm bombs, those and the 380 mm off-map artillery give you powerful area-control weapons early on in the game. In phase C due to the missing of powerful tanks and the limitation in infantry and artillery accessibility you will most likely be forced to hold the ground you captured in the first 2 phases. For this, holding the air superiority and having some good AT weapons is crucial.
Remember that many airborne division's units (identified by wings on their cards) can't be surrounded. Or at least, if they are, they don't care…
