27th Machine-Gun Battalion was not configured like their British counterparts with three machine gun companies along with a Heavy Mortar Company equipped with 16 4.2mm Mortars divided into four platoons. 4.2in Mortars were originally issued to infantry battalions early days in Italy. Due to personnel and equipment issues these mortars were consolidated into the 39th Mortar Battery. These battery personal came from the 7th Anti-tank Regiment along with Mortar Company forming in Maadi.
