Legend has it that the Virginians from 29th ID were earmarked as one of D-Day's first wave division because of the too many bar brawls they had initiated while in garrison in the UK. Untested in battle, the « Blue & Grey » happened to land in the face of the strongest enemy resistance, at Omaha Beach. Yet despite very heavy losses, they managed to break the German defences under the leadership of the division's second-in-command, General Norman Cotta, who had landed in the thick of the fight with his men.
